Yes — mental stimulation tires dogs out and reduces boredom-driven behaviors like chewing, barking, and digging. Ten to fifteen minutes of puzzle work can tire a dog as much as a walk, and it is especially valuable for high-energy breeds and dogs left alone.
What difficulty puzzle should I start with?
Start easy — a beginner (level 1) puzzle or a simple treat dispenser — so your dog succeeds and builds confidence. Rushing to a hard puzzle just frustrates them. Move up levels as they solve each one quickly, and supervise the first few sessions.
How do I introduce a puzzle toy?
Make the first go almost too easy: use high-value treats, leave lids off or compartments open, and reward any interaction. Once they get the idea, gradually increase the challenge. Never force it — keep sessions short and positive.
Are puzzle toys safe to leave a dog alone with?
