Will an OBD2 scanner work on my car?
Almost certainly, if it’s a car or light truck sold in the US from 1996 onward — OBD2 (OBDII) has been mandatory since then, so all these vehicles have the standard 16-pin port (usually under the dash near the steering column). What can an OBD2 scanner actually tell me?

Can clearing a code with an OBD2 scanner cause problems?
Clearing codes turns off the check-engine light and erases the stored fault, which is fine after you’ve fixed the underlying issue — but if you clear a code without fixing the cause, the light will simply come back once the car detects the fault again. Also note that clearing codes resets your emissions “readiness monitors,” so if you’re about to get a smog/emissions test, you may need to drive a while for those to reset first.
