Moka pots: buyer’s guide & FAQ

How do I use a moka pot?
Fill the bottom chamber with water up to the safety valve, put finely-ground (but not espresso-fine) coffee in the funnel basket and level it off (don’t tamp), screw on the top, and heat on medium — too high scorches the coffee. As the water boils, pressure pushes it up through the grounds into the top chamber. Take it off the heat when you hear a gurgle and the top is nearly full, and pour.
Does a moka pot make real espresso?
Not quite — a moka pot brews at lower pressure (about 1-2 bars) than a true espresso machine (9 bars), so it makes a strong, rich, concentrated coffee that’s espresso-LIKE but without the thick crema of a real espresso shot. It’s bold and delicious for the price, and great as a base for lattes and Americanos. Purists distinguish the two, but for most people it’s a fantastic strong coffee.
What size moka pot should I get, and what does "cup" mean?
Moka pot “cups” are small Italian espresso cups (about 2 oz), not big mugs — so a 6-cup pot makes about 10-12 oz total, roughly one large mug or two small cups. Match the size to how much you drink: 1-3 cup for a single serving, 6-cup for the versatile everyday choice, 9-12 cup for households. A moka pot works best brewed close to full, so don’t oversize.
Can I use a moka pot on an induction or electric stove?
Standard aluminum Bialetti moka pots work on gas and electric coil/glass stovetops, but NOT on induction (aluminum isn’t magnetic) unless the pot has a steel base or you use an induction adapter disk. If you have induction, either use an adapter or buy a stainless-steel moka pot made for induction. On gas, keep the flame within the base so it doesn’t scorch the handle.
How do I clean and care for an aluminum moka pot?
Rinse it with hot water and let it air dry — skip soap (it strips the seasoning that builds up and improves flavor) and never put an aluminum moka pot in the dishwasher (it discolors and degrades the metal). Empty the grounds after each use, and periodically check and replace the rubber gasket and filter plate as they wear. Don’t scrub off the interior patina; it’s part of a well-loved moka pot.
