What is a jigsaw best used for?

A jigsaw excels at cutting curves, circles, and intricate or irregular shapes — things a circular saw or table saw can’t do. Use it to cut out sink and outlet openings, scroll shapes, curved trim, plywood contours, and to make plunge cuts in the middle of a panel. With the right blade it cuts wood, plywood, laminate, plastic, thin metal, and more. It’s not the tool for long, dead-straight rip cuts (a circular saw is faster and straighter there), but for anything curved or detailed, the jigsaw is essential.

Top-handle or barrel-grip jigsaw?

Top-handle jigsaws (all picks here) have a D-shaped handle on top with the trigger under your fingers — intuitive, comfortable, and the most popular style for general use and beginners. Barrel-grip jigsaws put your hand around the body, lower to the work, which some woodworkers prefer for control and precision on fine curves, but they take practice and often lack a trigger lock. What jigsaw blade should I use?
