What kind of sheets are the softest?
Softness comes down to material and finish more than thread count. Brushed microfiber (like Mellanni and Utopia) feels buttery-soft and cool right out of the package and stays that way. Long-staple and Egyptian cotton get softer with every wash and breathe beautifully, but cost more. Sateen-weave cotton feels silky; percale feels crisp and hotel-like. For most people, a good brushed microfiber set is the softest feel for the least money.
How do I know what deep-pocket size I need?
Measure your mattress height, then add a couple of inches for a topper if you use one. Standard sheets fit mattresses up to about 12-14 inches; most sets here have a 16-inch deep pocket that fits the majority of modern (thicker) mattresses. If you have a very tall pillow-top or stack a mattress topper, get an extra-deep 18-21 inch pocket (like the Mellanni Extra Deep) so the fitted sheet doesn’t keep popping off the corners.
Does thread count actually matter?
Less than the marketing suggests. Above roughly 300-400, higher thread-count numbers are often inflated (counting plies) and don’t mean softer or more durable sheets. Material, weave, and finish matter far more. A well-made 300-thread-count cotton or a good brushed microfiber will outperform a cheap “1800 thread count” set. Buy on material, feel, and reviews — not the thread-count number alone.
Are microfiber or cotton sheets better?
It depends on what you want. Microfiber is soft, wrinkle-resistant, budget-friendly, and holds color well — but it’s less breathable than cotton, so very hot sleepers may run warm on it. Cotton (especially long-staple/Egyptian and percale) breathes better and feels more natural, but costs more and wrinkles. For value and easy care, microfiber wins; for maximum breathability and a natural feel, choose cotton.
How often should I wash my sheets, and how do I keep them soft?
Wash sheets about once a week (every 1-2 weeks minimum) in warm or cold water on a normal cycle. Skip fabric softener — it coats fibers and reduces softness and breathability over time; a little white vinegar in the rinse keeps them fresh and soft instead. Tumble dry low and remove promptly to cut wrinkles. Rotating between two sets (a reason to grab a 6-piece) doubles their lifespan.
