Humidifiers: buyer’s guide & FAQ
Cool mist or warm mist — which humidifier is better?
Both add the same helpful moisture; they differ in how. Cool-mist (ultrasonic or evaporative) is energy-efficient, safe around kids and pets (no hot water), and great year-round — the most popular choice. Warm-mist boils water first, so the mist is warm and slightly more sterile, and it can feel nicer in winter, but it uses more power and the water gets hot. Models like the Levoit here do both. For a child’s room, cool-mist is the safer pick.
What size humidifier do I need for my room?
Match the tank and output to the room. Small tanks (about 2 liters, like the AquaOasis and MistAire) suit bedrooms and nurseries up to a few hundred square feet; larger 4.5-6 liter tanks (the Levoits, MistAire XL) cover big bedrooms, living rooms, and open spaces and run longer between refills. Check the listed coverage area, and remember bigger tanks mean fewer refills but a larger footprint. For whole-house needs you may want a console or multiple units.
How do I keep a humidifier from growing mold or bacteria?
Clean it regularly — this is the single most important thing. Empty and dry the tank daily, and every few days wash it and descale with white vinegar (and clean the nozzle and base). Use distilled or demineralized water if you have hard water to cut white dust and mineral buildup. Never leave standing water sitting in the tank for days. Models with easy-to-clean, wide-open tanks (like these) make this much simpler.
What humidity level should I aim for at home?
Aim for about 40-50% relative humidity. Below ~30% the air is too dry (dry skin, static, cracked wood, irritated sinuses); above ~60% encourages mold, dust mites, and condensation on windows. A humidifier with a built-in humidistat/auto mode (like the smart Levoits) holds the level for you; otherwise, an inexpensive hygrometer lets you check. In winter, dial it back if you see condensation forming on cold windows.
Will a humidifier help with dry skin, sinuses, and coughs?
Often, yes. Adding moisture to over-dry indoor air (common in winter with the heat running) can ease dry, itchy skin and chapped lips, soothe dry nasal passages and throats, reduce nighttime coughing and congestion, and cut static shocks. It also helps houseplants and protects wood furniture and floors from drying out. It won’t cure illness, but comfortable humidity genuinely helps you feel and sleep better — just keep it clean so you’re not adding anything unwanted to the air.
