Planters: buyer’s guide & FAQ

Do planters need a drainage hole?
For most plants, yes — a drainage hole lets excess water escape so roots don’t sit in soggy soil and rot, which is the number-one killer of houseplants. All the picks here have drainage holes (and saucers to catch the runoff). If you love a decorative pot without a hole (a “cachepot”), keep the plant in a plastic nursery pot with drainage inside it, and lift it out to water — or drill a hole. When in doubt, choose a pot with drainage.
What size planter should I use for my plant?
Pick a pot 1-2 inches larger in diameter than the plant’s current root ball (or nursery pot) — enough room to grow, but not so big that excess soil stays wet and causes rot. When repotting a plant that’s outgrown its home (roots circling or poking out the bottom), go up one size. For a floor statement plant, match a large pot to the plant’s scale. Don’t over-pot; plants prefer a snug fit to a huge, waterlogged pot.
Why use a saucer under a planter?
A saucer catches the water that drains out the bottom so it doesn’t run onto your floor, shelf, or windowsill and leave stains or water rings — especially important on wood furniture. It also lets the plant reabsorb a little moisture. Empty standing water from the saucer after watering, though, so the roots aren’t sitting in it. All the sets here include saucers. For a floor plant, a saucer (or a stand with a tray) protects the flooring.
Ceramic, plastic, or terracotta — which planter is best?
Ceramic (glazed, like these) looks the nicest, is heavy and stable for tall plants, and retains moisture moderately — a great all-around indoor choice. Terracotta is porous and breathable, drying soil faster (good for succulents and cacti, or over-waterers) but it dries out quickly and can crack in cold. Plastic is light, cheap, and holds moisture (good for thirsty plants and big pots you’ll move). For indoor decor, glazed ceramic wins on looks and stability; match the material to the plant’s water needs.
