What size dehumidifier do I need?
Match the pint capacity to the space and how damp it is. For a medium room or a slightly damp area (up to ~1,500 sq ft), a 20-30 pint unit is plenty; for a large basement, a very damp space, or a whole floor (up to ~2,000-4,500 sq ft), step up to a 34-50 pint model. If the area smells musty, has visible dampness, or is a below-grade basement, size up rather than down. Note capacities now use the updated DOE pint rating, so a “34 pint” may equal an older “50 pint.”
Should I get one with a drain hose or use the tank?
A drain hose is a big convenience for anything but light use. With continuous drainage, you connect the included hose to a floor drain, sump, or run it downhill and never empty a tank — essential for a damp basement that would otherwise fill the bucket several times a day. The internal tank (with auto shut-off) is fine for a bedroom or occasional use where you don’t mind emptying it.
