What size crate does my dog need?
Your dog should be able to stand up, turn around, and lie down fully stretched — and no bigger. Measure length (nose to tail base) and height (floor to ears) and add a few inches. For a puppy, buy the adult size and use a divider so the space grows with them.
Are wire, plastic, or soft crates best?
Wire crates are the versatile everyday choice — airy, foldable, easy to clean. Plastic kennels are cozier, more secure, and airline-friendly for travel. Soft crates are lightweight for trips but only for calm, crate-trained dogs — chewers destroy them.
How do I stop my dog escaping the crate?
First rule out anxiety, which drives most escapes. For a physical escape artist, use a heavy-duty crate with reinforced latches or add carabiners to secure the doors. Never leave a determined escaper in a flimsy wire or soft crate — they can injure themselves.
Is crating a dog cruel?
Not when done right. To a properly crate-trained dog, the crate is a safe den, not a cage. Keep sessions reasonable — an adult dog should not be crated more than a few hours at a stretch — make it comfortable, and never use it as punishment.
Do I need a crate divider?
